Can CBD Oil Make You Happier?

What does make us feel happier? Even though we are inclined to name some external circumstances like family or travel, in reality it’s our brain’s chemical messengers called neurotransmitters that actually make us feel happy. An example of that is people that suffer from depression and no family time or amazing trips can make them feel better since depression is often an imbalance of the neurotransmitters.

One of the most important neurotransmitters that give us a feeling of well being and happiness is serotonin. Most of us probably heard of it and know that it is often called “The Happy Chemical”.

So the question here is, can CBD positively affect serotonin and make us feel happier?

Well let’s see...

It has been proven that people with depression and anxiety have less of serotonin receptors, or 5-HT receptor if we want to use a more scientific name, which makes it harder for them to process adequate amounts of serotonin. So what CBD does is it activates these serotonin receptors, helping people process more serotonin.

Have you heard of antidepressant drugs called Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, or SSRIs like Prozac and Zoloft? Well, they work in the same way as CBD. Both CBD and SSRI drugs work by increasing the availability of serotonin and are able to boost mood and relieve anxiety and depression.

Since CBD has demonstrated its capacity to boost serotonin which also means that CBD can help not just with anxiety and depression but addiction, appetite, sleep, pain and other conditions that can be associated with lack serotonin.

A few other fun facts about serotonin:

  • Serotonin is mainly found in the gut, brain and central nervous system.

  • Serotonin is a precursor to melatonin, so serotonin is also highly associated in regulating our sleep cycles and internal clocks.

  • Serotonin inhibits fear and stress hormone cortisol.

  • Serotonin regulates digestion and appetite.

  • Serotonin is involved in function of memory.

  • Serotonin regulates blood pressure.

Some ways to increase serotonin levels naturally:

  • Eating a healthy diet with healthy fats and protein

  • Reducing sugar intake

  • Healing digestion

  • Regular exposure to natural sunlight

  • Regular exercise

  • Relaxing and meditating practices

CBD can make you gain that feeling of general well-being due to its effects on serotonin receptors. It will be especially effective for people that do have imbalances in serotonin levels.
